Selections from new poems, “Still, Life.”

Stand lightly as the water flows,
buoyancy grounded by roots
taking nourishment in the world of river.
Every once in a while,
a current will move you, the stone,
slightly, downstream.
But otherwise, just stand.

Daily practice is best.
The medium of sitting is the breath.
The medium of painting is the paint.
The tedium of sitting is the mind.
The tedium of painting is the doubt.
But in any case,
sitting is just sitting, painting is just painting.
It helps in all cases to work with things as they are,
to embody the gesture of attention.
On the cushion, in the studio
where you surrender is the place you find ground.
