Painting Sweater
When I head down to the studio in the evening, I put on my cozy long sweater — which is an artifact of painterly action. It is my rendition of the artist smock. Something I wipe my hands and brushes on. This old Good Will sweater is one of the tools of my trade… supporting focus on the work at hand, so I can get messy and keep moving along.
Another tool is a lovely press on loan to me from my friend Judith — if you come to my open studio this Sunday, you’ll get to see it in action! I will have a couple of painted plates and soaked paper ready for pulling monoprints. That moment of peeling back the paper from the plate, after a few thorough and hearty rolls through the press is one of my favorite aspects of the art of the monoprint. This proofing press is a lovely heavy thing made by Nolan Corporation Printing Equipment. I have no idea how old it is… guessing the 40s or 50s. It’s solid beauty is timeless.
