I am always fascinated to see artist work in process, glimpses into studios, sketches and stages along the way, giving so much insight about the final result that hangs before me. My summer trip to London included a trip to the Matisse exhibit at the Tate (now showing at MoMA in NYC) and it was a treasure trove of Matisse process! I drank it all in… from color chips to sketches to photos of him in his studio, paintings and sketches everywhere. It was an inspirational view of his creative passion.
Here’s a glimpse of a piece in process from my own studio. I painted directly, from arranged flowers and textiles, without any intermediary sketching or photography studies. It is a fast and loose way to work, and very fun. This piece is large too, 24 x 36 inches, so the brush and the drips really cover ground.
Come see this piece in person in February! I am showing new work including flowers, birds and city scenes at Stonehenge Studios. Artist reception is on February 6, from 5:30-7:30. It would be great to celebrate spring and new paintings together.
