Eagle Harbor, Bainbridge Island
I’ve lived in the Pacific Northwest for over 30 years now, and have not adequately explored the San Juan Islands… Port Townsend has been the extent of my travels to these misty havens so close to home (and lovely it is too, I made lots of sketches and paintings from one of the last trips I took with my mother, in 2001). A couple of weeks ago, I visited my cousin on Bainbridge Island, where we got a thorough tour –– learning the history (some marvelous and some so sad) and enjoying the country culture at Bay Hay and Feed, and lively beer and pub grub at the Harbour Public House.
My cousin’s home looks out over Eagle Harbor, directly across from where the Seattle ferries dock and the Olympics peek over the green hills. It is a view of stillness and activity, water in motion, and sailboats at rest. I love the vertical reach of the masts and piers, and the light ever-changing on the water. It is rare I get a chance to paint a lovely waterway scene, from the comfort of indoors!
